In Honor of Mother’s Day: Mother and Daughter Have Unique Relationship

May 2023

momdaugh

Javelle Wynter, MD and Emma Bell-Wynter, MD

A love of science combined with compassion for people are the things that this mother and daughter have in common and led them both to a career in medicine.

Dr. Emma Bell-Wynter always enjoyed science as a youngster and knew she wanted to work in healthcare. With a desire to lead the team caring for a patient, she decided to become a physician. She attended medical school at the University of Medicine and Dentistry in New Jersey and did a residency that allowed her to see various clinical specialties. She found the field of Gastroenterology particularly interesting because of the variety of conditions she could diagnose and manage within the field. After working in private practice in New York City, she briefly left to work overseas in St. Maarten, where her father still lived at the time. She eventually returned to the US and joined Hawthorn Medical in 2004.

Dr. Javelle Wynter is the eldest of Dr. Bell-Wynter’s two children. She, too, was also always attracted to science and caring for people and felt that practicing medicine was the perfect combination of those two passions. She mentions that while her parents are both physicians, they never tried to steer her towards working in healthcare. She jokingly admits that she tried hard to find an alternative path, exploring everything from accounting, to law and even dentistry as possible career choices. Ultimately, growing up overhearing conversations between her parents about interesting cases, rewarding clinical outcomes and seeing their genuine love for their work, convinced her to attend medical school.

Dr. Wynter graduated from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN and then completed both Internal Medicine residency and Gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Virginia. She also completed a Therapeutic and Interventional Endoscopy Fellowship at Columbia University in New York City.

After some travel work, Dr. Wynter heard of an opening at Hawthorn. Sharing this idea with friends and colleagues, everyone thought it would be a unique opportunity to practice with her mother, who had been so satisfied in her work. Dr. Wynter joined her mother at Hawthorn in the Fall of 2022.

A mother-daughter relationship is often a very special one. What makes it even more extraordinary is sharing a similar path to a career as a physician, working together in the same specialty at the same organization, and sharing and immense passion to care for patients.

Hawthorn Medical introduces cutting edge prostate biopsy option with 3D MRI/Ultrasound Fusion technology

August 2018

Targeted MRI/Ultrasound Fusion biopsy is the latest technology available in the detection and management of prostate cancer, and the Urology Department at Hawthorn Medical Associates is proud to now offer this new standard of care.

Historically, finding the exact location of cancer in a prostate gland has been a challenge. Conventional TRUS prostate biopsy techniques are referred to as “blind” biopsies since physicians typically cannot easily view the specific location of any abnormal tissue. Now, using the revolutionary Artemis 3D imaging and navigation system, Hawthorn Medical physicians are able to better identify and more accurately biopsy suspicious prostate cancer areas.

The MRI/Ultrasound Fusion (or MR/US Fusion) targeted biopsy procedure starts by using pre-exam MRI prostate images. These images are then fused with real-time ultrasound images to create a detailed 3D high-definition map of the prostate. This allows the physician to accurately target any visible lesions during the biopsy.

“In selected patients, the ability to target lesions using the MR/Fusion technology can be very beneficial in finding a patient’s prostate cancer, or following a patient with known cancer,” explains Hawthorn Medical Urologist Derek Hausladen, MD.

Patients recommended for this procedure are men who, typically, have elevated and/or rising prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels or those with a clinical concern for prostate cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men after skin cancer, and one in seven men will be diagnosed in his lifetime. Prostate cancer can be a serious disease, but with early detection, most men have a 5 year survival rate of 90%.

Hawthorn Medical’s introduction of the MRI/Ultrasound Fusion Prostate biopsy system is the latest breakthrough option in providing patients with improved diagnosis and accuracy in the detection and treatment of prostate cancer.

The physicians of Hawthorn Medical Associates Urology Department see patients at both 535 Faunce Corner Road in Dartmouth and 851 Middle Street, Fall River.

Hawthorn Medical opens new medical facility

November 2014

531 Faunce Corner Road

531 Faunce Corner Road

On Monday, November 10, Hawthorn Medical opened the doors to a new medical building and began seeing patients at 531 Faunce Corner Road on its North Dartmouth campus.

This unique and streamlined 126,700 s/f, three-story facility was designed to optimize patient comfort and convenience while providing physicians and staff an environment to better coordinate patients’ care.

“By relocating most of our providers and services on one campus, patients have easier access to their doctors and specialty care services. This maximizes patient convenience while increasing our efficiency,” explains Hawthorn President James Tracey, MD. He adds, “Physicians and staff now have an environment that will allow them to work as a team to better coordinate patients’ care.”

A better way of caring

The goal of building this facility, and moving providers and staff to the new site, is to give patients comprehensive medical care in one location.

First Floor

The first level includes an expanded Urgent Care Center; the Orthopedics Department; a larger Rehabilitation Services area with natural light, private treatment areas, dedicated space for sports medicine treatment and new cardio equipment; the Laboratory, with six drawing stations; and a more spacious Diagnostic Imaging/Radiology department with all new equipment for x-ray, 64-slice CT, MRI and ultrasound.

Second Floor

On the second level, a bright and cheerful Pediatrics area with separate check-in and waiting areas serves the younger patients. Hawthorn Obstetrics & Gynecology (formerly Healthcare for Women) is located in its own area near the Women’s Center.

The new Women’s Center has separate registration and waiting areas and features a private mammography area, breast ultrasound, OB ultrasound and bone density testing.

Third Floor

The third level has a central registration area for check-in. All Family Medicine and Internal Medicine physicians are located here. The space was designed to specifically meet the needs of the “medical home” model of primary care practice. Medical home is the current model of “best practice” of delivering high quality primary care.

The 126,700 s/f, three-story building will expand Hawthorn services onto one campus and include a women’s center, pediatrics, internal medicine, orthopedics, a rehab center, OB/GYN services, diagnostic imaging, a laboratory, a walk-in urgent care center and administration space. Occupancy is expected in the fall of 2014.

This will be the fourth project on Hawthorn Medical’s Dartmouth site developed by Summit Smith Healthcare Facilities. In the building design, patient flow from registration to waiting to care areas and convenient access to imaging, laboratory and rehabilitation services were priorities.
