Hawthorn Urologists Are Using Robotic Surgical System

Two of Hawthorn Medical Associates Urologists are using a new robotic-assisted surgical system at Charlton Memorial Hospital. With the da Vinci® Surgical System, Dr. Derek Hausladen and Dr. Paul Milhoua can do complex surgery cases using a minimally invasive approach through tiny incisions.

The da Vinci system consists of the surgeon's console, a patient-side cart with four interactive robotic arms, a three-dimensional, high definition vision system, and EndoWrist® instruments. The EndoWrist, unlike equipment used in laparoscopic procedures, mimics the natural range of motion of the hand and wrist allowing surgeon's to make hand movements with control and precision.

"The da Vinci system preserves the physician's eye-hand-instrument alignment, depth of the surgical field and instrument control as they are in traditional open surgery," said Dr. Hausladen. The surgeon controls the movements of the robot's micro-instruments from the console, from which he can see a magnified, three-dimensional view of the operating field. "It allows us to replicate our surgery based on anatomic principles with finer movements and smaller incisions," he said.

Dr. Milhoua added, "The da Vinci system was ergonomically designed so that the surgeon, seated at the console, has his eye and hands in line with the instruments. To move the instruments or reposition the camera, the surgeon just moves his hands. For patients, these advantages translate into the benefits of diminished blood loss during procedures, shorter hospital stays and a faster recovery."

For the patient, a procedure performed with this system offers all the benefits of a minimally invasive procedure including less pain, less blood loss, less need for blood transfusions, fewer infections, quicker recovery and faster return to daily activities.

The da Vinci Surgical System is made by Intuitive Surgical. There are nearly 850 da Vinci systems in use worldwide.
