For the fifth year, Hawthorn Medical Associates provided free mammograms for area women who are uninsured or underinsured. During a Breast Cancer Awareness Month event held at the end of October, and continuing through the next week, Hawthorn performed a total of 48 mammograms. This translates into a contribution to the health of women in the community of more than $22,000.

The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 211,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. "By offering the free mammograms every year, Hawthorn Medical is doing its part to help women who might not otherwise have the resources to get this important yearly screening," explains Helen Amaral, manager of Hawthorn's Diagnostic Imaging Center.

During the Breast Cancer Awareness event held on Thursday, October 27, an American Cancer Society representative was available to answer questions and provide information on cancer prevention, detection, treatment and support. Ortho Biotech Products, LP, a pharmaceutical company that produces several oncology medications, provided the refreshments.
