Technology Is Improving Patient Care

Hawthorn Medical is now using a computer-based, electronic medical record system that enhances the delivery of care provided to patients. Called the Longitudinal Medical Record (LMR), the system provides a life-long record of a patient's care.

The LMR organizes all of a patient's medical information in a way that makes it easier for providers and staff to care for and communicate with patients. A patient's chart is always available, notes are completely legible, and there is improved access to information from a variety of sources.

Taking Better Care of Patients

Every exam room is equipped with a computer and patients will notice that providers and staff are entering information into it at each visit instead of writing it on paper.

When providers see patients, they will have all the information they need right in the computer in an easy to read format instead of flipping through a paper chart. This gives a more complete picture of a patient's medical history and treatment.

Since the LMR "understands" patient demographics, providers are alerted to preventive care and screening tests based on a patient's age, sex, etc. that should be discussed. For instance, a physician will be alerted when a woman is due for her yearly mammogram.

The LMR also improves medication management, which can be difficult if the patient sees more than one provider. All of the patient's medications will be listed and reviewed at each visit. If the provider prescribes a new medication, it is added to the list and any allergy or drug interactions will be flagged for patient safety. If routine lab tests are needed to monitor the effects of a medication, the provider will be alerted when they are due.

Medical history, chronic problems, and notes from previous visits with any Hawthorn provider are all available quickly and easily. Notes from physicians at other Partners HealthCare organizations, such as Massachusetts General Hospital or Brigham & Women's Hospital, will be there as well.

Security of the Utmost Importance

The patient information contained in the LMR is highly protected through a number of security features. Only authorized staff can view information and there are a series of passwords and tracking measures in place. Nothing can be added or changed without an additional password. The LMR meets all patient information privacy requirements mandated by law.
