HANDWASHING AWARENESS

In observance of National Hand Washing Awareness Week (December 7-13), here are the facts on how hand washing can prevent the spread of many illnesses such as the common cold and influenza.

Viruses can live on services for days. When your hands come in contact with a virus, a simple touch to your eyes, nose or mouth will likely make you ill. Hand washing is your first line of defense. But, a quick rinse under water won't help much. When washing hands you should:

  1. Wet hands with warm water
  2. Apply soap
  3. Rub hands together for at least 15 seconds focusing on fingertips, fingernails, and between fingers
  4. Rinse under running water and dry
  5. Use the towel to turn off the faucet

Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are also excellent at reducing microorganisms on your skin. Apply enough of the product to require at least 15 seconds for it to dry.
